The Bill began in 1983 when a brand new one-off
police drama called called 'Woodentop'. The episode
followed PC Jim Carver on his first day as a police
officer. The show was very different to any other drama
of it's time and proved to be a big success.
The one-off pilot was so well received by viewers
that Thames Television commissioned a full series of 12
episodes. Ever since, the programme has been titled 'The
Bill'.
The show overcame many obstacles in the early days,
from cast changes to two studio changes (Finally ending
up in an old wine warehouse where it has remained to
this day).
Many characters have come and go over the years,
sometimes in large character shifts (ie a large number
of officers being replaced at the height of big
storylines).
