I really wish Neil would tell someone about his son.
It's very sad watching that. And the little boy who plays Jake is amazing!!
But, it's still sad watching Neil at odds with his team.

I think Grace is a wonderful character & the actress is amazing!!
So glad Jack could see how much she'd been thru & praised her.
A pity he didn't actually tell her ... I think it would've made a difference to her.

Max ... Oh Max ... what can I say?   Undecided
Christopher has done his research well!!
But ... oh ... I think it's all starting to spiral downwards fast ...

Having said all that ... I think it was a good episode.

I can understand why Neil hasn't told anyone (apart from Bansky) - he's always been a bit reserved and had a cold front that he puts on to cover nerves, insecruity or something. He might have told Susie but she's long gone and while Grace is a replacement they don't have enough history yet.

Did anyone else wonder if Max was snorting cocaine in the same toilets Nick did?

Good to see that people are catching on quicker to something being wrong with him (although we don't actually know how long he's had the problem).

In my opinion, the whole story is starting to go a bit Marquess-style.  We have a formerly stable DI who is failing in his duties because of his personal life, and has a CID that is fast losing respect for him.  His deputy is a dark, but also formely stable DS who is spending most of his life stuck on coke.  All the DCs are either butting heads with the DS or suggesting some kind of CID coup to get the place back to normal.  To top it all off, the superintendent who was these guys DCI for anywhere up to ten years has BARELY NOTICED THAT ANYTHING IS GOING ON!  Stevie seems to be the only person not wrapped up in this at the moment, and she's hardly ever around.  Perhaps she's in the back of one of the vans snogging the commissioner...

There is one major difference to the Madquest era - the DC's are talking to each other about what is going on and comparing notes. Which is why they are going to workout what is going on with Max.

I think they are also going to be forgiving of Neil when he finally gets around to telling them about Jake. It's not like he's distracted becuase he's having an affair with the mother who adopted him out at birth. Only not becuase the writers realised that it would put off fans for life.

They're playing a quite typical, real-life office scenario: A busy professional who has a personal crisis. It's also typical for a male to internalize it; fearing to be seen as garnering sympathy.

Is Neil internalizing it to avoid getting sympathy or to try and reduce it's seriousness? Don't say it out loud to people at work it's less real and not really happening?

People deal with a personal crisis in various ways and for various reasons. I guess we'll have to wait until we hear it from his own mouth.

Well, we know that most of CID now know about Neil's son - seeing how Neil responds to Banksy telling Mickey and Terry will be interesting - I hope he doesn't tear into him.

In regards to the deal with Max, it appears that Terry has more or less taken on the role of acting-DS - in spite of the fact that Mickey has been at Sun Hill longer and has already been a DS, Terry seems to be the one making the decisions, and Mickey seems happy to defer to him.  I must admit that the mess that Max and Neil are currently in has only served to highlight the competence of Mickey, Terry, Banksy and Grace.

On the side, did anyone else notice that Simon Rouse was credited in tonight's episode (Ultimatum), despite that fact that the Superintendent never appeared?

Terry has longer in the job - that was how they decided who was in charge. Good to see that both Terry and Mickey acted in a realistic way - locking Max away from the case - telling Jo what was going on.

That Jake's news was good will get Banksy off - if it had been bad then he might have been angry. But it was nessecary to tell them. Too bad Grace is still out of the loop.

The Superintendent was on the phone and mentioned several times in the script so that counts as an appearance.

Good episode although the actually case was kind of weak.

I must be having a senior moment (or one of several) but I thought Neil's son had Down Syndrome. Or am I thinking of another programme entirely?
